This was painted plein air at Mingus Park in Coos Bay, Oregon. I have altered the stone supported culvert into a stone bridge, but kept the lovely landscaping with iris and skunk cabbage along the stream. The smoothness of the stream contrasts with all of the textures of the stone and plants.

Ferns have an elegant shape, turning almost white catching the sun. This bunch once grew under the tall pines on Beaver Hill. Since the clear cut logging, they share their space with grass and wait for the new trees to grow tall.

Oregon’s thick coastal forests limit the mountain views, except for a nicely placed clear cut like this. The logging road leads into the view.

Unlike most of my paintings which are done from life or reference photos, this one is painted from remembering my childhood guppies. The guppy shapes gave definition as if swimming through the flowing watercolor stripes.

Swimming Seal

Baby seals entertained us with their swimming antics in a beautiful little cove near Archway Rock in New Zealand. I liked the challenge of painting moving water over a moving object.
