Pond Grass

13 Nov

Pond_Grass

11″ x 14″

At Devil’s Kitchen in Bandon, Oregon, Johnson Creek flows across the beach and out to the ocean. The tides and blowing sand from the dunes are continually rearranging this stream. The painting captures grass that has grown on the edge of a little pond area with the gently rippling stream passing by.

Elk River Mist

12 Nov

The coastal mist muted the colors of the fall trees and provided the day’s challenge to painting plein air. The moist air made the watercolor dry super slowly.  Finally the paint out ended abruptly when the mist turned to drizzly rain, which made fine splatters all over the painting. It was salvaged at home, working from photos and memories of that misty day.

Cabin Porch

The building’s angles are softened by the tree and porch beam shadows. While painting this plein air, I was delighted at the realization that I could see through the window to the window around the corner with a hint of the sun on the porch there.

Swimming Seal

Baby seals entertained us with their swimming antics in a beautiful little cove near Archway Rock in New Zealand. I liked the challenge of painting moving water over a moving object.

New Paintings via Cropping

22 Mar

One of the advantages of painting with watercolor on Yupo paper is that the paper can be cut down and reframed for a better composition or to refocus on the best part of a painting.  Every once in a while I go through my stored away paintings to see which ones could be made better by cropping.  These four are my newly created paintings from cropped old ones.

Fish Hatchery Forest

22 Apr

Fish_Hatchery_Forest

The woods at the edge of the fish hatchery lake sparkled with light that filtered through the leaves and reflected off the lake.   This was started plein air last summer and just finished for the May, 2017,  Miniature and Small Image Show at the Art by the Sea Gallery in Bandon, Oregon.

Sweet Creek Light

This is the third painting done from the Sweet Creek Waterfalls hike.  Here the filtered light seems to splash down the waterfall and spread out over the rock shelves, and into shallow and deep pools.
